It's the Little Things

Lately I've begun to notice "the little things" and their significance more and more and this has changed my attitude and opinion of the man I am going to marry and our wedding day which happens to be coming in at  just over 10 months away.

Sunday night, Kory made plans to meet up with his long time friend who was visiting from Canada, Marc.  I thought it'd be best to let them catch up on their "man bonding" so I curled up with my laptop and dog for the evening to complete our wedding invitation list.  Not only did they need to catch up on life, but Kory had a very personal question to ask his dear friend.  When Kory came home from his dinner with Marc, he was eager to help with the list.  Passively, I mentioned that chocolate chip cookies sure sounded good.  Next thing I know, Kory is running out the door at midnight to find a grocery store that was stocked with my cookie of choice.  When he got home, I think my heart melted.  I couldn't help but think, "Wow... I am just so lucky that I get to marry him..."   And to top it off, the cookies he chose were to die for!  I'm one lucky girl, you don't have to tell me! :)

The personal question...  The significance of this meeting with Marc is very much so tied to our wedding.  Marc is a youth pastor in Alberta, Canada.  Kory and I agreed that we wanted to maximize the meaning of our wedding and keeping with this we thought it would be an incredible gift if someone we both  loved could perform the ceremony.  The first person that came to mind - Marc, one of Kory's very closest friends.  New to his pastoral role, we were completely uncertain of whether or not Marc would be able to perform wedding ceremonies - and to add to the complexity, wedding ceremonies in Mexico.  In addition to the technical and legal side, we had no idea if this would be something he would be willing to do.  Luckily for us, we're able to do a symbolic ceremony, which requires no official licensing for the pastor.  And we're so blessed that Marc enthusiastically accepted our request for him to perform our marriage!  When Kory shared with me Marc's response, I was consumed by a certainty that this was in fact going to be the most amazing day of my life, to date.  As long as those that we love are surrounding us, and it's Kory I'm vowing to love forever, nothing else really matters!

Wedding Whoas

For the first time since Kory 'popped the question,' I am completely and totally overwhelmed by the decision making that comes with planning a wedding.  Not only are we still in limbo about exactly where we're going to get married (restaurant, hotel, etc), but we also have not determined what kind (formal, casual, somewhere in the middle) of wedding we want or who we'd like to stand by our sides.  Choosing to have a wedding abroad, I assumed the details would all just fall into place on their own... little did I know things don't happen on their own in Mexico either! : /   The most stressful part is that people want to know everything NOW!  I haven't chosen a color, tried on a dress, or considered how big I want my bridal party to be so when I'm asked day in and day out, it starts to get a little overwhelming.  Am I behind?  In addition to worrying about the ceremony, we've also decided to have a 'hometown reception' in Punxsy that needs a whole lot of planning.  Deep breath.
Here's to Kory having a whole lot of patience and even more chocolate chip cookies stored up for emergency breakdowns!  I must say, eloping does sound more enticing than ever...  but I'm in this wedding thing for the long hall, fear not!

Chelsea Rose

Immediately following all of our Christmas adventures my mom, little sister, and I were scheduled to fly out to my hometown of Farmington, New Mexico for the birth of my oldest sister's second daughter.  It just so happened that we had purchased Steelers tickets for my dad's 50th birthday.  While the gals were heading to the airport, the guys were heading to the football stadium for a wonderful day full of man-bonding over sports and yummy food.  The men were extra fortunate that Kory's dad, Joe, was able to join them!  It was great that the dads got to spend a little time getting to know one another.

Our trip to New Mexico was seemless.  When we got to my sister's house we were all so full of joy and anticipation.  The three of us took over the house like we owned the place! My brother in law - the only male within miles, handled the 3 additions to his household wonderfully.  It was amazing that we could all be together to share in my sister's excitement!

When the baby still hadn't arrived the day before my sister and mom were scheduled to leave, they chose to extend their stays in hopes of being present for the baby's big reveal.  That night my brother in law burst into our bedroom at 3 am with the announcement that it was time!  The adrenaline immediately started pumping.   We were running around the house like wild animals with no direction.  Eventually my well experienced mother reminded us that it could be hours if not days before the baby was born.

A few hours later, after we'd fed and bathed my seven-year-old niece, Brooklyn, Justin, the daddy to be, called to tell us that my sister was nearing 7 centimeters dialated.  We rushed to the hospital just in time to be present for the most amazing experience any of us had ever witnessed.

We were instantly in love with Miss Chelsea Rose.  She was the most perfect little ball of baby love.  Weighing in at 9 lbs, 2 oz and a whopping 23 inches long, the mystery as to why my sister was an unusually massive pregnant woman was solved!

Christmas, 2009

It's been a long time since I enjoyed Christmas as much as I did this year.  Everything just seemed perfect.  For starters, Kory and I drove across the country as we traditionally do, simply so our dog doesn't have to suffer in the cargo hold of an airplane.  Kory thought it would be a good idea if, instead of stopping for the night in a hotel, we just pull over and nap when necessary.  Since he was the primary driver, I went along  with whatever he desired.  The first day, Saturday, he drove 17 hours straight, napped for 4 and finished out the final 8 hours on Sunday.  We certainly got to Pennsylvania a lot quicker than previous trips.  The weather was ideal.  There wasn't a speck of snow or glisten of ice until we got to Ohio.  It was like a scene from White Christmas.  And the best part... the roads were clear and dry - we couldn't have asked for a more amazing Christmas Welcome as we were nearing our destination!

We got the festivities rolling immediately.  Kory's niece and nephew (Emma and Aramy) were having their kindergarten Christmas play the following morning.  What a way to kick start the holiday fun with our families! It was absolutely adorable to say the least!  The singing and dancing was enough to put anyone in a Christmas spirit!  To top it off, Kassy, Kory's youngest big sister,  is substituting for the Punxsy Elementary music teacher so she was in charge of putting the whole program together for all of the schools.  It turned out wonderfully and it was awesome to see her in action!  Following the Christmas play, we got to join Kory's Aunt Dee, cousin Chanti, and Kassy for lunch!  What a fabulous first day!

Because Kory's family chose to celebrate Christmas on the 26th instead of the 24th this year, Kory so "generously" volunteered for he and I to take care of all of the Christmas Eve cooking and planning this year for my family.  Traditionally, we don't have a sit down dinner because the kitchen is occupied with preparing Christmas dinner.  So keeping with the norm, Kory and I prepared lots of snack and hors d'oeuvres.  My doll of a little brother made the most amazing spiral ham that accented our veggie trays and dips perfectly!   That evening we all played games and did some last minute wrapping.  My mom and I got to have some one-on-one time.  She reiterated how incredibly happy my family is to welcome Kory into our family. I can see it in the most subtle interactions but it was still wonderful to hear from my mom!  And similar to Thanksgiving, my family constantly reminded us that this time next year, Kory and I will be married.  This reality is still a challenge for me to believe... but I am so excited!

Because most of us stayed up until 3 am reminiscing, baking and wrapping gifts, Christmas morning we all slept in.  I am notorious for waking up at the crack of dawn and insisting everyone "rise and shine."  I believe last year my dad responded to my childlike enthusiasm with, "Did mama forget to inform you that Santa doesn't deliver to 24 year olds?"   Contrary to what everyone expected, this year I wanted nothing more than sleep.  I must be getting old or maybe after 25 Christmases I realized that everything looks just the same at 9 am as compared to 5 am.  When we finally got around to getting everyone up and equipped with an XL cup of coffee it was nearly 11 o'clock!  Luckily this year we changed things up at the Rosenberger house - a lot.

We agreed that within our family we would draw names to make gifts and draw an additional name to buy a gift.  It turned out to be a great success.  The gift opening on Christmas morning took on a whole new meaning.  Realizing that the presents were truly homemade gifts from the heart made it feel like we'd finally figured out how to celebrate to maximize the meaning of the holiday. While we loved it, my parents struggled a bit with only having to purchase a couple of things.  I think they will adjust! Needless to say, we will doing the same thing next year.  Not only do we save hundreds of dollars by avoiding the materialistic chaos, but the gifts have more meaning than money could buy.  Kory and I have already agreed that this is a concept we'd like to incorporate in our own family Christmases one day.

For lunch we headed to the Frostburgh Hall - for the annual Blose Family Christmas.  This is another tradition I look so forward to each year!  Kory's family is hilarious and unfortunately living so far away we don't get to see nearly as much of them as we'd like to.  This is an event where you're guaranteed to laugh and have a wonderful time.  This year it seemed unusually empty but turned out to be a great time as always!
After lunch we ate our third meal of the day back at my parents' house.  By the end of the day, we were all very content in our food comas, in front of the television.

As I noted previously, Kory's family chose to celebrate Christmas with their mom the day after Christmas this year.  It turned out to be a great idea.  I love having something to look forward to after Christmas so I especially enjoyed this swap.
Marilyn, Kory's mom, is notorious for her amazing food and this Christmas celebration was nothing short of incredible!  It's always tough to save a little room for dessert and this experience was no different... though stuffed to the max with prime rib and mashed potatos, I managed to eat my weight in Marilyn's delectable desserts! Yum!
Following dinner we opened our gifts.  Like my family, we also exchange gifts within Kory's immediate family.  What a joy it is.  Watching the little kids tear open their packages and seeing their eyes light up when the prize is revealed is priceless.  An extra special change this year was that all of Kory's nieces and nephews were calling me "Aunt Sara!"  My heart melted each and every time I heard it!  I am so blessed to be marrying into a family full of awesome kids that I get to watch grow up!

For every reason imaginable, this Christmas was the best ever... and I expect next year will be even better! :)

We'll Be Home for Christmas

Tomorrow, Kory and I will begin our annual journey to Pennsylvania for Christmas with our families.  We have been looking forward to and planning for this trip for quite some time.  Living so far away from our families is always challenging but luckily we have these couple of weeks each year devoted to  family time to provide some relief.

This year I am extra excited not only to spend Christmas with my family but also with Kory's!  His family is blessed with 5 kiddos that I will soon have the honor of calling my very own nieces and nephews.  And this time next year, it will be official!
To add to my joy and anticipation this Christmas, we're expecting another tot on my side of the family, shortly after Christmas!

There's so much to look forward to this Christmas and so very much to be thankful for with my family and family-to-be! :)

Thanksgiving, 2009

This holiday season is the last one that Kory and I will spend as singles.  Luckily, our last Thanksgiving unwed was amazing! It was everything you hope the holiday will be. We were all in great spirits, the company was awesome, the food was incredible, and we were all thankful for the blessings we’ve been given.

We spent this Thanksgiving at my adorable and hugely pregnant big sister’s (Kelly) house in my hometown – Farmington, New Mexico. We were lucky enough to have my younger sister (Jazmin) with us for the week. We spent the first part of her visit celebrating her 21st birthday in Las Vegas. Following our mini adventure, Kory generously offered to drive us from Denver to Farmington so we could all be together for the holiday.

I’ve never been more thankful that Jazzie and Kory get along as well as they do. She effortlessly entertained him in the front seat while I cat napped in the backseat – for the entire 8 hour drive.  The laughter and joking was like a lullabye...  I’m terrible, I know. We arrived around 3 am on Wednesday morning.

Kelly, Jazzie, and I spent all of Wednesday preparing for Thursday’s festivities. Kelly prepped the turkey and made yam casserole while Jazzie made the most delicious desserts and homemade cranberry sauce. My sisters are truly amazing – I feel like the runt of the litter much of the time. They included me where possible… taste testing their masterpieces and scrubbing dishes. Kory spent most of the day catching up on his lost sleep and entertaining my niece, Brooklyn.

With a great day of work and family bonding behind us, Wednesday night seemed like a good time to “pop the question.” I sat my sisters down and with the help of a little poem Kory and I constructed, I asked them to be my matron and maid of honors in our wedding. It was a great moment. I never thought I’d wonder if they’d agree to it, but I was a bit nervous. Luckily they both said they would stand by my side at our wedding! It seemed like the perfect ending to a great day with both of my sisters!

Thursday was an equally fabulous day. Most of my brother in law’s family joined us. We had an amazing array of characters of all ages. The day was full of laughter and light hearted fun. And the men even cleaned up after dinner... a sight none of us imagined we'd ever witness! :)

The only moments I was caught off guard were those when someone made a comment like, “Next year we won’t have to do the dishes on the boat!” Or “Next Thanksgiving we will have crab and brisket and maybe some pizza!” Or most shocking, “On this day, next year, you will be a married woman!” Statements like these almost took my breath away, literally. It is crazy to think that I will be getting married in a definitive amount of time. It’s even crazier to think that people might actually come! Haha. In less than a year, Kory and I will be married!!!!!

This Thanksgiving I was so thankful for my awesome sisters and the most enjoyable time together.  And of course, I felt so blessed to have Kory by my side as my fiancĂ©, my husband-to-be. He fit in perfectly with my family and friends as always, only reaffirming what I already know. What a perfect way to start the 1 year countdown to our wedding day!

subject: my picks for your wedding dress

I checked my email the other evening and low and behold I had new mail from my fiance!  My first thought, "Why is he emailing me when we're 3 feet apart?!"  Then I saw the subject, "my picks for your wedding dress."  My stomach sank.  Wedding dress?!   We just decided when and where to get married, don't I get a breather before moving onto things like cakes and wedding dresses?
Of course I was very curious to see what he imagined his bride in on the big day.  My guess- traditional. Kory is a very traditional kind of guy in a lot of ways.  On the other hand, we are having an untraditional ceremony, getting married on a beach so maybe he will think outside the box.  WRONG.  90% of the dresses were very formal and traditional as I'd initially predicted.  This is the one that made #1 (photo below).  Imagine me in this dress, barefoot in the sand with the guys in khaki shorts and tropical shirts! haha.  I think we are going to have to discuss the level of formality we are going for a bit further before I decide on a dress style or we rule out renting tuxes!

Vow to Wow... ugh!

I had no idea how much pressure was put on the couple (more the bride than groom) to be in the best shape of their lives until I started reading every online article and magazine about wedding planning that I could get my hands on. The catchphrase for this promise to have the perfect body is  "Vow to Wow." Case in point: http://www.brides.com/myweddingplanner/bodymakeover/goals Unfortunately for those of us who are stress eaters, this is an impossibility - losing weight while planning a wedding! I joke with Kory that I will "wow"... but ironically, I don't mean by being chiseled and lean! haha! No "brideorexia" here!
Pressure, pressure, pressure.  The fact that we've chosen a cruise only increases the need to look presentable in a bathing suit!  Eek!  Maybe we ought to rethink this tropical destination and head to the North Pole - to be married in snow pants and parkas!  :)

I've already requested the new Reebok Easytone sneakers for my Christmas gift from Kory - if I can tone my butt and thighs while walking from the couch to the kitchen, why not?! hehe. I guess with the wedding just over a year away, it is time to start thinking about eating healthier and fitting in some sort of exercise into my stagnant life.

1..2..3..4...

This is the progression that my fiance's face has gone through following our engagement photo shoot...

Kory's adorable nephew, Aramy, voted that I marry Kory #3! LOL.  I love it!  His niece, Lexi, chose Kory #4!  I guess Kory wasn't the only one that disapproved of the mountain man look! :)  I have to say... I kinda like it! hehe

Caribbean Cruise

After what seems like a thousand discussions,  hours spent researching, and a lot of guidance from our travel agent, Kory and I have settled on a 4 day Caribbean cruise for our destination wedding.  This was not what I'd pictured when we decided on a "destination wedding," but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea.  Never having been on a cruise, it's difficult to imagine what it will be like... but with our families by our sides,  I'm certain we'd have a great time anywhere! : )

We will have the ceremony on the beach in Cozumel, Mexico ~ Wednesday - November 24, 2010.  1 year & 9 days from today!

On a comical note, Kory and I have found ourselves glued to the TV when Amazing Wedding Cakes is on!  We've decided to go 'bakery hopping' and taste test all of their wedding cakes... only to be "indecive" and need to "research" our options further.  We're trying to milk this engagement phase for all that it's worth!  : )

Residual Effects of a Photo

The following facebook post from my future sister in law, Kristi, to Kory totally cracked me up.  Not because of the content of the question but because of the reality of Kory's horror that proceeded our engagement photos!

With this in mind, I created a little visual aid for those that don't get to see Kory on a regular basis.  He went the distance by including his entire head in the shaving process.  This new look was quite the surprise when I returned from a girls' weekend in New Mex with my big sister.   I guess he really was upset by his hairy reflection in our engagement photos.  I personally thought it fit the "Denver" setting.  I suppose it would have gone better with a mountain motif rather than downtown/city theme we chose.  Oh well.  Needless to say, he will shave before our second attempt at engagement photos! :)

Life Lesson from the Dog Park

This afternoon when I took a routine trip to the dog park, I met the most extraordinary woman with a very touching tale.  Her name, Anne King.  She was there with her daughter and her grand-dog.  It all began when I walked through the park gate and  noticed a dog that looked similar to mine.  When I inquired about the breed of the dog, a man in a wheelchair responded harshley, "He's not a pittbull!"  Similarly accustomed to people asking me if my dog is a "pitt mix," I immediately sympathized with the severity of  his response.  I pointed out that my dog too is often mistaken as a pitt and feared because of this association.  Especially interested in the topic,  a very attractive, well dressed elderly woman approached me and  immediately struck up a a conversation about the unfortunate and generally undeserving reputation that pittbulls carry.

As I commonly do at the dog park, I talked about my dear dog-child, Samantha,  her unique breed and the amazing bond that we are able to form with our pets.  In general, the people you encounter at a dog park love their canine companions more than most.  I found that Anne was no different in her love for animals she has had in her life.   Anne expressed to me that her dog had recently passed away and was clearly distraught about this reality.  Anytime I hear about someone's dog passing I am immediately overcome with emotion. I cannot imagine life without my sidekick Sam! It was very clear that Anne realized my empathy and wanted to talk about her dog so I inquired further about her dog's breed.  A jack russel terrier, the sweetest animal she has ever met.   The pain in her face was undeniable.  I just met this woman and I found myself holding back tears.  With a lump in my throat it was all I could do to not throw my arms around her and hug her in hopes of relieving some of her pain.  For the dog lovers of the world, it is a very dreaded day when a dog passes.  It is like losing the most loyal friend.

When I asked how the dog died, I never would have imagined Anne's response.  "He was grief stricken.  He died mourning."  At this point, I knew this poor woman's story was far more painful than only losing her dog.  "He died grieving for my passed husband. The vets all said this was not unusual when a dog loses its owner."  I had chills.  With the realization that she had lost both her dog and husband, my heart broke again for her.  When I didn't respond, because if I spoke, I knew the tears would fall from my eyes - she continued on with her story.

"It really was love at first sight.  He was a police officer in Canada and I was a victim's advocate in North Carolina.  When one of my clients passed while on vacation in Canada, he was the first on the scene.  He called me to talk.  He was devastated about the death.  I knew I needed to meet him.  I got on the first plane to New Brunswick, Canada.  When I stepped off that plane and we looked in eachother's eyes, it was like we had found what we'd been searching our entire lives for.  It was true love."  As if she had returned to that place in time.  she told me with such conviction about how he was undoubtedly the love of her life, her soul mate.  She relived  the wonderful times they shared and the undeniable adoration she felt for her husband.  She proudly informed me that he was a mountie in the Canadian police.  This job took her all over the countryside of Canada.  She talked of how well her sweet Gordon, her husband, treated everyone he came across and how she was his princess.  "We never shared a harsh word.  He loved like no one I'd ever met and lived life with the most admirable passion!"

Several times she noted that she couldn't believe she was able to talk about Gordon without breaking into tears, though it was clear that she was putting forth great effort to remain composed.  She suggested that maybe I was just meant to hear her story.  This touched me even further and I only wanted to hear more.

When I asked how long they were married, I was surprised by her response.  "10 wonderful years..."  She must have read the surprise in my  expression because she continued, "When you find your soul mate, every day is a gift... a month, a year, a decade, or a century.  I'm just thankful we found eachother, even late in life."  I was speechless, again because I knew where this conversation had the potential of going and I was far from confident that I had the emotional strength to discuss it.

As expected, she turned the table and asked about my life situation and if I had a "special someone".  I told her about Kory and our wedding plans or lack there of.  Her eyes were glossy with tears.  "You are so blessed, my dear.  To have a whole lifetime together... to grow old with your soul mate.  Please appreciate the gift you have been given."  I didn't know what to say, even though I had predicted she would bring this to light.  I had chills, I wanted to cry. Again,  I couldn't speak. Immediately I was imagining my life without Kory and just knew if I let my mind stray on this path  I would end up an emotional mess.... surrounded by strangers and their rambunctious dogs.   I thanked her for the advice and for sharing such a personal story and giving me the most amazing insight at a time when I am just so overwhelmed by the idea of planning a wedding!  We both agreed there are lessons to be learned in her experiences.

I tried to lighten the discussion by  mentioning that we'd considered Prince Edward Island as a wedding destination, only to be talked out of a northern local for the event.  With great enthusiasm she talked of  beauty of the island and every reason why I need to add it to my list of places to see.  Living only a short drive from the island, she insisted that if Kory and I are able to make it to her 'neck of the woods' she would happily have us to her cottage and she gave me her phone number.  I was flattered by her offer and delighted by the idea of her getting to meet Kory!

The remainder of our time at the dog park Anne and I discussed shallow things like weather and our travels.  She even gave me a Canadian coin worth $2 and insisted I keep it as an incentive to come visit!
I will never ever forget the wisdom this dear old woman shared with me.  I will cherish my life with Kory, my soul mate, and the time that we have together with a new awareness of how precious it truly is.  What an unexpected blessing this routine trip to the dog park became, and an angel Anne King is for giving me a lifelong gift through her story.  I'm certain she was right in thinking I was meant to hear her story... I haven't stopped thinking about it since.

Engagement Photos

I was pleasantly surprised by the way the photos came out, considering our experience and the little bits that we saw during the shoot.  On the other hand, when Kory saw these photos he repeatedly asked why I didn't insist on him shaving! LOL. For this reason alone, he's insisted on a second shoot!

"You get what you pay for..." - Engagement Photos

After our engagement photo shoot I could hear my dad's voice yelling at me - "You get what you pay for, Sara!" Never have I believed him more than I do now.

We thought we would save some money and find an "amateur" photographer on Craigslist to shoot our engagement photo. I responded to several ads in hopes of having my pick of the litter. Unfortunately only a couple photographers responded and only one agreed to give me the raw photos, unedited. (I prefer to edit them on my own.) So we went with him - "Ronnie Renaldi." In this age of digital photography, it seemed likely that the photo quality was guaranteed - we only would need some direction on how to pose...

"Ronnie" and I only corresponded through email. He, unlike the travel agent, refused to talk on the phone. I assumed this was an indication of his age - little did we expect or know it had far more to do with his fluency in English! :\ We were initially going to meet last Sunday evening but the weather was not cooperating so we chose to postpone a week, until today. I had asked that Ronnie choose a contemporary city setting. We hoped to not only have engagement photos but a souvenir to take with us when we move away from Denver. I was thrilled when we suggested an architecturally modern bridge overlooking the city! It sounded like the perfect spot.

When we get to our meeting spot, I was naturally looking for an Italian looking young man with camera cases... with a name like Renaldi. Up walks "Ronnie" - young man and camera cases, only not Italian. Asian maybe? His accent was so strong that he pronounced my name as "Sad-uh." Ok. No biggie. Kory and I are not even slightly racist. In fact, one of our closest friends happens to be Chinese. The only reason we were surprised was because of the last name which we later concluded must be a pseudonym and his strong accent obviously the reason he preferred to avoid phone calls.

So we start the shoot. The setting is really as amazing as it sounds. The bridge is looking slightly down at the glowing city scape. The sun is setting. We start in a little secluded corner or the bridge to avoid the crowds of people. "Ronnie" just starts snapping away. He stops. I ask, "What would you like us to do now?" We managed to understand, "Go over there and do the same thing." He points to another place on the bridge. Ok... but what were we doing? This is how the entire photoshoot went - us guessing what we had done before that he seemed to like. We were clueless. A couple of times he told me I was too stiff, but really, other than that, nothing - NO direction whatsoever! Luckily Kory and I managed to have a great time! He would tell us to kiss and hold it... so we would stand there for several minutes lip locked obviously longer than he desired, until he would finally yell, "OooK!" haha! He showed us a couple of photos that he'd taken. From what we saw of the "good ones", they were all terrible. The worst part - We're standing awkwardly staring at one another or at the camera with the most beautiful background. So much lost potential!

Oh well... as my dad always says, "You get what you pay for!" Hopefully we'll get at least 1 non-kissing photo worth putting on our save the dates... if so, it's money well spent! :)

A Tropical Thanksgiving

Today we met with our new best friend, our right-hand man, our wedding planner, and travel agent - Kristi. After an extensive discussion about how to maximize the enjoyment of our wedding experience, we decided to forgo a typical summer wedding for a Thanksgiving adventure. With this detail known, our new BFF, Kristi, will search her little heart out until she finds the best options for us! Knowing that we are getting guidance from a professional and a newlywed herself gives me a peace of mind I never would have imagined possible.

Why Thanksgiving?

Originally Kory and I were drawn to northern destinations like Prince Edward Island, Maine, or even Alaska., all of which are locations ideally visited in the warmer summer months. Unfortunately this wasn't the dream vacation location that everyone else had dreamed of. Because we are asking our family to join us on our special day, we thought the least we could do is choose a destination that appealed to as many people as possible. Seeking suggestions from Kory's family and mine, I was given some great ideas! Kelly, Kory's sister, suggested we check into cruises and more southern destinations. With this, we researched "hot spots" like Mexico, Florida, Costa Rica, the Bahamas, etc. The photos of the white sand beaches and crystal clear waters were undeniably breathtaking. The catch, these places are scorching hot in the summer. We searched high and low for that undiscovered tropical island that averages 75 degree temp with less than 60% humidity anytime in June, July, or August. Kory tried to tell me over and over, you cannot get that close to the equator in the summer and expect cool weather! Kristi, our travel agent, confirmed this. To her knowledge, this is an impossibility in the summer... but not the late fall... Thanksgiving!

Now that we have a time period figured out, and a general idea of where, I am looking so forward to next Thanksgiving - 2o1o. I think the holiday will have a whole new meaning for me, forever - starting this year!

Happy Thanksgiving!

V is for Vows

Kory and I have decided to write our own vows in an attempt to make our wedding as special and meaningful as possible. Though we don't know when or where we are getting married, I have been inspired to get started on this very minor but important detail. I am surely doing things completely backward, but I am one of those people that enjoys the small details and personalization far more than the big ones that everyone seems to focus on. So I am doing it my way! :) I started going through all the thousands of pictures I have on my computer, for no apparent reason. While most of them of are of our sweet dog-child, Samantha, I did run across a few of us and thought I would put together a little collage (all photos since our engagement). I suppose I'm in that "lovey" kind of mood thinking about what I will say to Mr. Blose in our anticipated wedding ceremony.

Seeking Travel Agent to Act as Wedding Planner!

We are still having one heck of a time deciding where we ought to tie the knot. We would like to go somewhere we've never been, somewhere romantic, but at the same time kid-friendly. Name that place! This is a riddle we seem not to be able to solve on our own. I've thought to myself time and time again that I am a perfect candidate for a wedding planner! Indecisive! When I mentioned this to my sister, Kelly, she suggested I seek the advice of travel agent - much cheaper and probably more familiar with the unique setting we are searching for!

Brilliant!

The first travel agent that responded to my cry for help fit the "Old School Travel Agent" persona just right... initially. She responds to my email request, "I do not prefer email. Send me your phone number." Ok. This is what I expected. As a child of 'Generation Email,' I'd assumed that the only people who still use travel agents are those that refuse to purchase a computer - think Orbitz and Travelocity. When she followed up with our phone conversation by sending me link after link to orbitz related websites that I can access easily on my own and possibly have, I couldn't help but wonder how she stays in business and why she refused to email me! (She also informed me that she is not at all familiar with travel within the continental US.)

Anyway, I moved on to the next candidate! If I'm paying for their services, I'd like to find someone that can give me something that I can't get on my own - with a simple click of my mouse! Candidate 2: She is familiar with both national and international travel as well as destination weddings! She emailed me back (!!!!) and she feels very confident that with a group of our size she will be able to get us great deals on her super secret travel agent databases! Yay! Hopefully we found a winner. We meet with her on Saturday. I'm crossing my fingers that we can get this destination at least narrowed down to a realistic "few" and get the ball rolling! I've concluded that if she can't help us then maybe we just aren't destination wedding people! Who knew it would be so hard to plan a vacation for others! I have a whole new appreciation for the task travel agents deal with on a daily basis.

Destination Wedding... Destination Unknown

Our first item of business is to determine where to get married. We've agreed since day one that we would both like to get married in a faraway land... I believe the wedding gurus coined this a destination wedding. We've also agreed that a beach setting would be most desirable for what we have envisioned. One would think that these few criteria would narrow down our options to a reasonable list. Think again. It all seemed so simple until we really started thinking about it, researching it, and discussing it. A "beach." What do we mean by this? Oceanside? Lakeside?... or even Pondside? (Who would ever consider a pond to have a beach!) We've decided that while any body of water would add to the mood and atmosphere, we would prefer the vastness and beauty of the ocean. Great. Now it's simple... or not. Do we prefer the unique drama of the rocky beaches of the north or the sandy, tourist drawing beaches of the south? And do we add international travel to the options? We're stuck. Then you throw in the option of cruises which gives a whole different perspective of the beach experience! What to do... what to do?

The Proposal

We had been working our tails off trying to get the rental house in livable condition, even taking time off work to paint - so when Kory said he was sending me to a spa for a massage as a "reward" I just thought he was being very thoughtful and appreciative. He also made dinner reservations at an intimate restaurant downtown to "celebrate our progress on the house." Little did I know this would be the beginning of his very sneaky scheme to get me to agree to marry him.

The day (Friday, September 18) started far earlier than either one of us desired. We stayed at our soon-to-be home working until after 1 am Thursday, the night before. Because the cable and internet hookup guys were scheduled to come at 8 am and Sammie had to be taken to doggie daycare, we had to be up and out of the house by 7 am. Needless to say we were both exhausted! While Kory waited to meet the technicians, I took a cab to my 9 am spa appointment that he had arranged. I got to spend my morning at the downtown Aveda Spa which was absolutely marvelous! From an amazing facial and pedicure to a massage worth dying for, I got the whole works! As sleepy as I was, I had no problem relaxing and thoroughly enjoying this wonderful experience! It wasn't until the masseuse asked me what the occasion was - that someone would so generously send me off for a day of pampering, that it all started to make sense. She boldly suggested, "He is either signifying that this is your last day together or that he wants to spend forever with you... guys don't just do things like this!" I thought to myself, "Kory would do all this for no reason!" (And for the record, this is not the first time he has spoiled me with spa time. But I have to admit, her comment did make me wonder if this was not really all about the countless hours I had spent painting the house we're moving into!) Then, during my pedicure, the nail technician asked, "Have you guys talked about marriage?" Skeptically I answered her question and promised I would call and let them know if my time spent with them at the spa was indeed the beginning of something else.

When my day of pampering was complete, they sent me on my way to eat at the adjacent Italian restaurant (also arranged by Kory). Because the cable install was not going as planned, he could not join me for a late lunch. Instead of eating alone I got our lunches to go and hopped in a cab to join him at the house. We spent several more hours waiting for the cable to work. When it was finally done, we chose to skip further labor and head home for a nap before dinner instead. Just as I thought we were dosing off, Kory jumps up and says, "I forgot, I have to meet [the manager of my my baseball team] to give him the equipment! He wanted to have a batting practice tonight!" I asked if he wanted me to ride along, as the place he had to deliver the equipment to was fairly distant. He responded with, "No, you sleep." I didn't argue. I snuggled in the bed that never felt so comfortable and immediately drifted off to sleep. When Kory got home from his "delivery," he had Sammie in tow. We had just over an hour until we needed to leave for our dinner. While Kory napped, I got ready. I was still a little suspicious but I never imagined a proposal in a public place - so with no plans after dinner I began to realize that the folks at the spa just weren't used to people like Kory. I did notice that Kory had on a new shirt - a nice white button down with embroidered designs. My response, "When did you go shopping without me?" He quickly redirected the conversation. So off to dinner we went. It was about a 35 minute ride to the restaurant, Fruition. When we arrived, I realized that Kory had chosen an upscale, adults only type of setting - somewhere we would very rarely go. My suspicions all came back.

For dinner Kory chose a beef dish that came with grilled romaine lettuce and duck fat fried french fries (trans fat anyone?) and I had a duck dish - my first taste of duck. Dinner was wonderful. As usual, I preferred Kory's choice over my own and vice versa. We discussed making a Cold Stone run afterwards for dessert, my weakness. Instead we settled on sharing a delightful Peach Cobbler. Side note: At some point over dinner, when I had decided that this really was just Kory being sweet - making it such a special day for no reason, I jokingly asked, "Is there something you want to ask me??" He laughed as he always does when I catch him off guard with this question.... and we carried on with our meals. After dinner we just headed home. No further plans for the evening, just returning to snuggle in and watch some Clint Eastwood flick (particularly, the one with a monkey named Clyde that I’ve still yet to see) and cuddle up with our dog, as we usually do.

Getting ready to put on PJs and settle in, I walked out of the laundry room to find Kory in the living room. "So Sara, I have a question for you..." he said in a tone that made me think of THE question that I joked about him asking over dinner. I laughed and amidst the laughter he got down on one knee and asked THE question! "Will you marry me?" I couldn't help but laugh harder. I really thought he was joking! (Looking back, that would be a terribly cruel joke.) Then he pulls out this little gray box and opens it to reveal a beautiful diamond ring! At this point it hit me that he was not joking but I was still laughing frantically - maybe shock induced! I hugged him and kissed him and I think I kind of tackled him and managed to get him in a bit of a headlock of a hug! When I was done freaking out he politely reminded me that he was waiting for a response. I laughed again at the realization that I had not responded, "Of course I will marry you!"

I spent the rest of the evening admiring the ring and smiling at my future husband. Deep down I was dying to call my family and friends, but the different time zones forced me to be patient and wait until the following day. After asking a million questions, Kory explained his plan. He revealed that he never went to deliver any equipment to his baseball manager. He had intended to pick up the ring before I got home from the spa but because the cable took so long to hookup he had to come up with a plan B. Kory spends a lot of time playing baseball so this was a great lie. I never thought for a second that he might be going somewhere else, let alone to pick up an engagement ring! He also let me in on that his plan all along was to make me think that it was THE day, only to leave me shocked and disappointed that I was wrong and that it was ‘just another day.’ Hence the waiting until we got home. I was certainly surprised and the ladies at the spa were thrilled to know their suspicions were correct.
